Protect your assets from Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) threats.

In today's digital landscape, data security is paramount. However, the threat of EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) events poses a significant risk to our critical infrastructure. Whether originating from space weather events, nuclear explosions, intentional devices, or lightning strikes, EMPs can disrupt operations and compromise data integrity. It's not a matter of if, but when such an event will occur.

The consequences of EMP events are clear: prolonged downtime, data loss, irreparable damage to equipment and potentially catastrophic impacts on business continuity. Recovery from a nuclear EMP event could span months or even years, severely impacting productivity and reputation.

What is an EMP? (Electromagnetic Pulse)

The four
main EMP threats

  • Geomagnetic storms stemming from space weather phenomena have the potential to wreak havoc on electronic systems, serving as stark reminders of the vulnerability of modern technology. Historical events such as the Carrington Event of 1859, the Solar Storm of 1872, and the Magnetic Storm of 1921 underscore the significant impacts of these disturbances.

The Carrington Event (1859): Named after astronomer Richard Carrington, this event is one of the most well-known geomagnetic storms in history. It occurred when a massive solar flare erupted from the Sun, sending a barrage of charged particles towards Earth. The resulting geomagnetic storm caused widespread disruptions to telegraph systems worldwide. Operators reported sparks flying from their equipment, telegraph lines became electrified, and some operators were even able to send messages without the use of batteries due to the induced currents in the wires.

The Solar Storm of 1872: In August 1872, another powerful solar flare unleashed a geomagnetic storm with notable impacts. Telegraph systems experienced widespread disruption, with operators reporting similar phenomena as seen during the Carrington Event. In some cases, telegraph lines caught fire, and communication was severely disrupted for several days.

The Magnetic Storm of 1921: This event, occurred following a series of solar flares. While less severe than the Carrington Event, it still caused significant disruptions to telegraph and radio communication systems. Operators reported interference and signal distortions, highlighting the susceptibility of early electronic technology to space weather disturbances.

These historical events serve as poignant reminders of the potential consequences of geomagnetic storms on electronic systems. As our reliance on technology continues to grow, understanding and mitigating the risks posed by space weather events are paramount to maintaining the resilience of our infrastructure and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of critical services.

  • Portable EMP burst-devices, even as small as a briefcase, pose significant threats, targeting power sources and specific equipment without warning.

  • A NEMP event could cover vast areas, resulting in catastrophic consequences for critical infrastructure, emphasising the need for robust protection measures.

  • Lightning strikes, although localised, can cause severe damage to electronic systems, underscoring the importance of protection against these unpredictable events.
